Trusting God's Purposes

Do you find yourself wondering where your path is headed in life? Certainly you have wondered where the path of the country and even the path of the world is headed. Perhaps you also wonder if God’s ultimate purpose is still in place. Paul wrestled with that when considering some events of his own time. He gives some “worshipful advice” to these thoughts (text below).

 

I’ve been meditating through that advice this week as I continue to work through the book of Romans. The final verses of chapter 11 are precious. Paul has been wrestling with the plans of God as a Jewish man in a church body that had become primarily Gentile. His burden was to see more Jewish people believe in Jesus as Messiah. And so he had to leave all these things in God’s mysterious hand. God encourages us to do the same when we don’t know exactly why what is happening happens to be happening.

 

Even when we don't understand the ways of God, His purposes are still certain. When we don’t fathom what He is doing, we must come to the conclusion that what He is allowing is deeper still than we could plan on a human level (fancy that!). We may never understand it all, but we must continue to remember that all these things are from Him, to Him, and for Him. And that is fine because that is what our own days are for in the first place.

 

I’m reminded of dear Fanny Crosby. We have just passed the 200th year since her birth, and I’ve enjoyed reading her autobiography recently. What a testimony of a lady who was given over to the hidden purposes of God. Her eyes were lost due to a physicians “mistake.” Yet she finds in this mistake the hand of God and no reason to become bitter at others. She felt that God allowed sight to be removed from her that she might see spiritual things so much more clearly. And we have all been blessed by her poems and hymns that do just that = )

 

"Do you know that if at birth I had been able to make one petition, it would have been that I was born blind? Because when I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Savior."

 

Oh, what a happy soul I am,

 although I cannot see! 

I am resolved that in this world

Contented I will be." F. Crosby

 

Let’s take that supernatural view as our worldview today in whatever we face. And try to find time to meditate on these words from Romans 11:33-36.

 

“Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
    How unsearchable his judgments,
    and his paths beyond tracing out!
Who has known the mind of the Lord?
    Or who has been his counselor?
Who has ever given to God,
    that God should repay them?
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
    To him be the glory forever! Amen” (Romans 11:33-36).

 

Keep focused on Him today, brothers and sisters!

The Three Eclipses of the Bible and What They Mean Our eyes come across three eclipses in the Bible. The first one is when God judged Egypt for mistreating His children. This was one of the ninth of ten plagues... the final one before total rejection. "So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days" (Exodus 10:22). The second is the glorious one when Jesus is on the cross and the wrath of God for our sin is placed on Him. This darkness too lasted three hours. In Psalm 73, Asaph wrestles with an age long question. Why do wicked people prosper (at times). We do see that, don't we? Perhaps that person at your workplace that cuts corners and harms others and yet they get promoted and paid more. But you are working as you ought and seem to get overlooked, or even let go! This happens in so many areas. Asaph really struggled with this. Then he went to the house of the Lord and remembered that the prosperity of the wicked is truly temporary. Even if it lasts a decade or two. It ends one day. Whereas the blessing the Lord gives - the blessing of life with Him and fullness of joy will last for eternity. So today, GAIN an eternal perspective of GAIN. And rest in the Lord's goodness and provision for today. I love how he ends the Psalm: "Whom have I in heaven but you?
