The Purpose of the Law for You

Image
A s we finish the study of the Ten Commandments, we should consider the all important application question. What does this all mean? My father-in-law, who was a very practical man, told me to keep my teaching practical. A body of truth should be both insightful and helpful. “Let’s find a handle for this suitcase.” We have examined the 10 “dos” and “don’ts” of the Israeli Law, now, let’s try to understand the reason these are important to you. What should I do about these commands personally? To develop a handle for this suit- case, let’s answer two questions carefully: What happens if I don’t obey all the Ten Commandments all the time?  What is the ultimate purpose of the Ten Commandments? What Happens if I Don’t Obey the Ten Commandments All the Time? Perhaps at this point in our study you can name each of the Ten Commandments. That’s great! However, the primary purpose of our study is not just so that you would know each one of the Ten Commandments. The ...

Lloyd Jones and Billy Graham – Association or Separation

Image
I just finished Ian Murray’s biography on Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones.  His ministry is an inspiration to me.  I love the simple consistency he exhibited and his reliance upon God ordained methods to accomplish God’s purposes. One area I find Lloyd Jones exhibited great wisdom was how he graciously resisted the overwhelming tide of the ecumenism of his day. Dr. Lloyd Jones believed that the ends should not justify the means.  In the 1950’s, ecumenism in England was championed by most Evangelical leaders.  Leaders like J I Packer believed that they were to gain greater respect by association with and dialog within theologically liberal associations.  The hope was to heal the cancerous body from within by being a healthy cell.  His end goal – a more respected evangelical voice. His means – accommodation with theological error. Most conservative evangelicals [1] today side with Lloyd Jones against Packer.  Association with those who deny funda...

What is Gospel?

The word Gospel refers to sharing good news with someone. In Greek, it is composed of two seperate buildingblocks: The prefix eu (good) + the word angelo (angel or messenger). Consider a N.T. illustration. Paul was only with the Thessalonian believers for a few weeks before he was persecuted and thrown out of the city. Because of his quick departure he feared that those who professed Christ during his short ministry there would be scattered. So, he sent Timothy to Thessalonica to see if they continued in the faith. Timothy visited and discovered good news regarding their faith. In turn, Timothy came back and “brought the good news” about them (1 Thessalonians 3:6). This is the only time this word is used in the N.T. where it does not refer to the good news about Jesus (although in one sense this is related). Timothy was the bearer of good news to Paul about the Thessalonian believers. As Gospel proclaimers we have good news handed to us from God – that His Son died for all. It is our j...
