A Summary of the Bible Message

Image
The Next LIFE Groups Booklet is online and available for order. This booklet is a is a six lesson survey of the content and message of the Bible. It is a good refresher for all Christians. It would also be a great introduction to Christianity to new believers, or to those who are just beginning to explore the Christian faith. Although it is designed for a small group format, it can be used effectively in one on one or individual studies. LIFE Groups Survey of the Bible Message by timrichmondnyc I think the study is a balanced approach (between covenant/dispensational frameworks)  which sticks to biblical theology rather than over-systematizing the message and content of Scripture. Below is the concluding summary of the booklet.  Please e-mail me with questions/comments.  If you would like to order a copy of the booklet for use in your church, Bible study group or private study, use paypal below.  They are $4 plus shipping and hand...

On Luke and Matthew's Genealogy of Jesus

Image
A Jewish Rabbi in our neighborhood is passing out DVD's of a debate between himself and a Christian teacher (who will remain nameless).   In the video,   Rabbi Mizrachi boasts of asking numerous Christian leaders and pastors why there are two separate accounts of the family tree of Jesus and has never been given an answer.   Two things surprised me about this.   First, he didn't say no one gave him a good answer, he said no one has even given an answer.   I found that hard to believe.   Second, the Christian teacher he was debating did not give him an answer.   That was a bit troubling. Since then, a few other people asked me the same question, and two of them had watched the video.   So, I'd like to offer a brief answer.   If you want to get into more detail (and survey the of related questions in the minutia) you can review the reading material below. Let me state the question simply.   Why are the family trees given by Luk...

Future Israel

Future Israel - Why Christian Anti-Judaism Must be Challenged By Barry E. Horner Readability 4 Spiritual challenge 6 Doctrinal Agreeability 9 This topic (and book) was brought to me by an unbelieving Jewish man who started studying the New Testament (NT) because he has observed anti-Semitism historically in Christianity and wanted to see for himself if the source was the NT, or an improper interpretation of the New Testament. So, up front, I want to challenge my friend that Jesus and the majority of the NT writers are Jewish, and their writings are not anti-Semitic.   And Horner does  great job showing that through appealing to OT and NT sources.  Another reason this topic is of considerable interest to me is the number of my friends that are becoming more Reformed in areas beyond Soteriology to a Reformed Eschatology and Ecclesiology.      In Future Israel Horner traces a correlation between anti-Semitism in history and a Reformed E...

Intimate Worship Part 1 - Delighting in Worship

Image
Having children is a delight, and I believe the feeling is reciprocal.   Recently Asher (2yr old) has been doing something that highlights his delight in a cute way.   We usually put him to bed a little later than the others (he still gets a decent nap each day), so Asher has mom and dad to himself for a bit.   He loves this time (three sisters are not vying for attention).   But when his bed-time finally arrives there is a bubble-burst look on his face, and he can frown with the best of them.   The cute part comes next.   After he is put to bed, he knows not to come out to us or he's in trouble.   But he also wants to be with us.   His solution - hang out quietly on the floor just outside of his room, and just in front of the living room.   Almost every night lately we have had to put him to bed after falling asleep on the floor (hardwood) ... longing to be with mom and dad (Ok, I admit it; mostly longing to be with mommy). This shou...

Crazy Love

Crazy Love (Francis Chan) Readability 10 Spiritual challenge 9 Doctrinal Agreeability 8 When I come across a contemporary Christian book that "makes it" in sales, I usually don't set my expectations too high. But this one met and surpassed expectations.   Several chapters are worth the price of the book on their own.   Chan challenges us repeatedly to be Christ-like.   Sad to say, that is radical in today's pop-Christian culture. Brief Summary: I especially enjoyed chapters 8-9.   After the first chapter, there is not much of a sequence/development of thought from one chapter to the next, so you can jump in just about anywhere and feel the biting conviction of living the life of Christ in this age.   Also, I did not take the time to view the videos encouraged at each stop.   Sorry, that is a great idea, but I don't always have Internet access when reading. Here is a brief summary of each: 1-Stop Praying Chan encourages us to wor...

Lydia's Look @ Krishna's Followers

Image
We pass out Gospel literature on a weekly basis in our neighborhood to the rush-hour commuters...  Today we were surprised by some of Krishna's followers - Lydia tired of them fairly quickly. "Lydia, would you rather they be here, or pass out tracts in quiet?" "Quiet." Lydia can be a bit particular about work conditions in ministry  =)
