I often hear people quote 1 Timothy 4:8 to discourage exercise. Now, to be fair, those who quote it that way often do so with a grin. "Are you training for a race? Well, you know 'bodily discipline is only of little profit.'" But is that actually what the verse is saying? You need the body! The body sure needs each part to work well. So too, the church body needs you to help it function properly.

What would you think of someone who refused to celebrate the Fourth of July? Perhaps you would conclude that they were from another Country. You might even consider that they did not value the freedom gained here in the US through that Independence Day. There is another day of independence that is even more profound and eternally significant. This day commemorates the resurrection of Jesus. It remembers our deliverance from sin and the bondage to the Law because of His resurrection. This is true, eternal independence! And yet, some citizens of that heavenly country show very little incentive to meet together each Sunday, each Lord's Day, the true spiritual Independence day. Make each Sunday a significant day in your schedule to gather with the others in the church to celebrate Jesus' resurrection.
